http://cosam.calpoly.edu/gallery/csmgallery.html#groundbreaking

Construction on Cal Poly’s Center for Science and Mathematics has entered an impressive stage. The $131 million, 197,000 square-foot building was made possible by $110 million from voter-approved state education bonds and $21 million in private donations to Cal Poly. In late January, heavy equipment and tree crews dug up, potted and moved four decades-old trees to the Cal Poly Leaning Pine Arboretum and one to Science North (Building 53). With the trees safely removed, crews began knocking down the walls of the north wings of the old science and math complex, known affectionately to generations of students as the Spider Building because of its rambling design. Cal Poly staff and students are capturing the demise of the Spider Building on video and in photos.

Phil Freelon recently spoke to a group of students at Houston’s Ryan Middle School. Lisa Gray reports that the North Carolina-based architect was in town to present his rethinking of Emancipation Park at the Menil Collection. The children of the low-performing school all knew of the park—it’s only a few blocks from the school—and the prominent African-American designer explained its long and prominent history within Houston’s black community

“There are so few of us in architecture, we haven’t developed a distinctive style. Look at music, where the barriers to entry are low: We developed jazz; we developed the blues. But where’s architecture’s Dizzy Gillespie? There just aren’t enough of us.”

Green codes are coming: What will happen to U.S. Green Building Council??

If you talk to USGBC, their plan is the continue to push the envelope, to accept the new floor established by the new green codes, and to ramp up their standards and requirements to increasing levels of sustainability. It will be very interesting indeed to see if USGBC can do this and still maintain its current business model based on numerous accredited professionals, member organizations, applications for certifications, general market penetration and resulting fees and cash flow.

Size matters

Beyond Buildings blogger Aaron Betsky reports that today’s architecture—while generally of a higher quality than when he was a young architect graduate in the 1980s—still leaves something to be desired. “What is lacking, more often than not, is a sense that the resulting building reaches beyond correctness, beyond just being there, and beyond fulfilling its problem statement,” Betsky writes. “We need a few more buildings like the ones Gehry still designs, or Steven Holl, or a younger architect like Brad Cloepfil.”

November Architecture Billings Index

AIA chief economist Kermit Baker reports that November’s Architecture Billing Index moved back into positive territory after a slip in October. A three-point gain puts the index at 52.0—only the second monthly increase in billings since early 2008. “With ABI scores above the 50 level in two of the past three months, the prospects of a sustainable recovery in design activity are enhanced,” Baker writes. But pessimism persists among professionals, with one-third of firms expecting revenue to fall in the new year and half of these firms expecting more than a 10 percent decline

(12/01/2010) I am so angry with Cal Poly’s records office. Not once, but twice have they not processed the transcript requests I have sent. They also do not offer a rush option. This time I left them an entire month to get the transcripts out and they have failed. None of the other schools have given me this kind of trouble. Thanks – now I have one more thing to worry about! Jerks!!!!!

While on a family trip to Shelbyville, Marge is dismayed to see how Springfield residents are perceived as hicks in a production of “Song of Shelbyville.” At the next Springfield Cultural Activities Board meeting, Marge convinces the townspeople to fund a Frank Gehry designed concert hall, which goes bankrupt opening night. The ever generous Mr. Burns assumes the debt of the hall and turns it into The Montgomery Burns State Prison. When Mr. Burns pressures Chief Wiggum to increase capacity from 99% to 100% Homer finds himself imprisoned for kicking a can down the street 5 times in a row. Homer becomes a snitch after accidentally ratting on Snake during a breakout. Homer enjoys the benefits of snitch life until Fat Tony puts a mark on his head for selling out the mob. As president of the Activities Board, Marge uses her concert hall key to sneak into the prison and convince Homer that snitching is wrong. National Guardsman swoop in at the last moment to save the cornered couple and Homer decides to use his snitch powers for good by having the prison shutdown.

Architect and planner Daniel Hudson Burnham. In the midst of late 19th century urban disorder, Burnham offered a powerful vision of what a civilized American city could look like. He built some of the first skyscrapers in the world; directed construction of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition that inspired the City Beautiful Movement; and created urban plans for Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Manila—all before the profession of urban planning existed. In fact, some say that he invented it.
